The following table can be used to convert between Japanese 'emperor' years and western years. Japanese years start withe the reign of a new emperor and Since Emperor Showa passed away in 1989 and the present emperor succeeded to the throne in the same year, two Japanese era names ‘Showa’ and ‘Heisei’ were used in 1989.
